I think it was unfortunate that Ireland had to play the ODI series first, with points in the league table at stake, and without a warm-up match. Playing the T20s before the ODIs would also have been a better arrangement, the results only having the context of ranking points.

It was also a bad toss to lose, given Ireland had to bowl in the heat of the day. The Bangladesh winter is beginning, with considerably lower evening temperatures providing better bowling and fielding conditions.

That said, the collapse was disappointing. Marufa Aktar bowled a hostile opening spell, and got plenty of movement. Her dismissal of Gaby Lewis with a sharp inswinger, followed by the unlucky wicket of Amy Hunter put Ireland on the back foot, and once Orla Prendergast was caught when trying to up the scoring rate I think the game was up. But the later batters could have dug in, and got valuable batting time even though there was little chance of a win. But too many opted for the sweep, and were dismissed by playing across straight balls. While the Bangladesh spinners bowled well and gave little away, they did not seem that threatening to me. There was not much sharp turn.

It sounds negative, and ODIs are not net practice, but maybe some extra time in the middle would have paid dividends in the remaining matches.

I also think there is a case for playing Cara Murray as a third spinner. Bangladesh know their own conditions, and they picked a side that could have bowled 50 overs of spin if required.

I think Ireland has an attitude of, no matter what situation, we stay positive and go hard, even if six or seven down. To be honest, I can see why. When they lost in the qualifiers against Scotland, a lot of the dismissals in that collapse were batters in two minds, playing without conviction. Even Prendergast's dismissal against Bangla, she didn't go through with the full shot. If she did, it would have cleared mid on. I think Ireland at times, and probably still too often to be considered a top side, collapse because of mental fogginess rather than mis-executing aggressive shots.
